IMPORTANT
The automatic transmission ZF 6HP are showing to be a common failure item in these vehicles around the 120,000Km age and even as early as 90,000Km on vehicles which tow allot.
An auto service is not carried out under ANY Land Rover service schedule as the auto is classed as filled for life.
I guess this is correct, once it fails, that's the life of the automatic and the repairs can exceed $7000.00.
We recommend to do an auto service at 60,000Km to 75,000Km. This involves the removal of the original Land Rover automatic sump and filter unit (one piece), draining the automatic fluid, replacing the pan and filter with an aftermarket upgrade kit and re filling the automatic transmission with oil. The reason we use an upgrade filter kit is because the Land Rover replacement involves raising the engine off its mounts to refit. Many of wasted hours. Flushing the automatic may also be required depending on the condition of the automatic fluid.
This automatic service is worth around $950.00 to complete due to the cost of the upgrade kit. Further services will cost around $550.00. Mush better than $7000.00 plus.
In actual fact it does not hurt at all to replace ALL the lubricants around this time as the serviced for life option is fast becoming an expensive exercise for the owners whose vehicles are outside the new car warranty. Oils are cheap.
